The Best Time to Charter a Yacht in Fort Lauderdale (It''s Winter)

Charter Journal||Azure Yacht Charters

If you've been waiting for the right moment to charter a private yacht in South Florida, stop waiting. Winter is it.

From October through January, Fort Lauderdale transforms into one of the finest yachting destinations in the world. The humidity drops, the trade winds steady, and the Atlantic takes on a clarity that makes every anchorage feel like a postcard. This isn't a coincidence — it's why snowbirds have been migrating here for generations, and why our calendar fills faster in winter than any other time of year.

Here's what makes the season so special, and why now is the time to book.

The Weather Is Simply Better

South Florida summers are beautiful — but they're also hot, humid, and prone to afternoon thunderstorms that can cut a charter short. Winter changes everything.

From October through March, average temperatures hover between 68°F and 78°F. The humidity retreats. The skies stay clear for days at a time. And the northeast trade winds that define the season make for ideal sailing conditions on the catamaran — steady, predictable, and refreshing rather than punishing.

For motor yacht charters, calmer winter seas mean smoother passages to the Bahamas and the Florida Keys. You'll spend less time bracing and more time enjoying the view from the flybridge.

The Bahamas Are 50 Miles Away

One of Fort Lauderdale's greatest advantages as a charter base is its proximity to the Bahamas. Bimini sits just 50 nautical miles offshore — a two-hour crossing on a calm winter morning.

In winter, that crossing is at its most reliable. The Gulf Stream, which runs between Florida and the Bahamas, is calmer and more predictable than in summer. Full-day and overnight charters regularly make the run to Bimini or the Berry Islands, where guests anchor in water so clear you can see the bottom at 20 feet.

The Exumas are further — a multi-day voyage — but even a day trip to the Bahamas Banks offers snorkeling, swimming, and the kind of isolation that's hard to find anywhere closer to the mainland.

Fort Lauderdale's Intracoastal Is at Its Best

Not every charter needs to cross open water. Fort Lauderdale's Intracoastal Waterway is one of the most spectacular urban waterways in the country, and winter is when it shines.

The "Venice of America" earns its nickname in winter, when the mansions along the waterway are occupied, the mega-yachts are in port, and the light has that low golden quality that makes everything look cinematic. A half-day Intracoastal charter in November or December is one of the most visually stunning experiences we offer.

For sunset charters, the winter sun sets earlier and lower on the horizon — which means longer golden hours and more dramatic skies. Our sunset package runs from roughly 4:30 to 7:30 PM in winter, and the light during that window is extraordinary.

The Florida Keys Are a Day Trip

South from Fort Lauderdale, the Florida Keys offer a completely different character. The reef system off Key Largo is one of the most biodiverse in North America, and winter is prime season for visibility — often 60 to 80 feet on a calm day.

A full-day charter can reach Key Largo, spend several hours snorkeling or diving the reef, and return to Fort Lauderdale by evening. It's a genuinely different ecosystem from the Bahamas — more intimate, more colorful, and accessible without an overnight passage.

Peak Season Means Peak Experience

There's a practical reason to book winter charters beyond the weather: this is when the industry is at its best.

Our crew is fully staffed. Our provisioning partners are operating at full capacity. The marinas are active, the restaurants along the waterway are open, and the energy of the season is palpable. If you've ever wanted to experience Fort Lauderdale the way the yachting community does — this is the window.

It also means availability is limited. We typically fill our winter calendar by early October. Guests who wait until December to inquire often find their preferred dates are gone.

What to Expect on a Winter Charter

Whether you're booking a three-hour sunset cruise or a full-day Bahamas run, a few things are consistent across every Azure winter charter:

Professional crew. Captain Ernest Vasquez and our team have been running these waters for over 15 years. They know the anchorages, the weather patterns, and how to make a day on the water feel effortless.

Gourmet catering. Chef James Okafor handles provisioning for all full-day and overnight charters. Menus are customized to your group — dietary restrictions, preferences, and occasion all considered.

Two vessels to choose from. Our 60 ft Prestige Flybridge motor yacht is ideal for groups who want speed, stability, and a full salon. The 60 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran offers more deck space, a wider beam, and the sailing experience that makes the Bahamas crossing feel like an adventure.

No surprises on pricing. Half-day charters start at $1,800. Full-day from $3,200. Sunset from $1,350. Fuel, crew, and standard provisioning are included.
